Tip of the Week

Do you believe that most people want to see you succeed in your life? As difficult as that may be for some of you to imagine, I believe it is true. I believe that the grandstands of life are filled with those who are cheering you on to victory. In fact, I can almost see them now, standing up, waving their arms and banners for you, hoping that you will succeed in everything that you do!

That thought occurred to me one night when I took my grandchildren to an Atlanta Braves game. I watched and listened as the stadium erupted time and again with sounds of people wildly cheering on their favorite team. Each fan was hoping his or her team would win. They were not so much cheering against the opposing team as they were cheering for their own. In other words, the emphasis was on the positive and not the negative.

Whatever we do in life, aren’t we entering into it with the thought of success? When someone buys a stock, isn’t it with the idea that it will increase in value? No one hopes that it will decrease and cause them to lose money! Also, at the same time, someone else may be selling a stock in order to get the most out of their investment before that stock takes a tumble. Both are looking to be successful.

In the business world, the same is true. People get involved in a business venture because they believe they can make their lives better. They believe that they have a better opportunity to succeed. No one goes into business at the outset believing or hoping that they will soon fail.

Isn’t that true about relationships, as well? Everyone who has ever gotten married went into their marriage with the attitude that it was going to be wonderful. Couples spend a lot of money and invite friends and family to celebrate what they hope will be a successful marriage partnership. Sadly, we know that in 50% of the cases, they will not succeed, yet that does not prohibit people from getting married. Everyone who has every attended a wedding is hoping that the new couple will be happy together and will experience a long life of love as husband and wife.

In any endeavor of life there is a starting point. If there is something that you want to accomplish, then there is one thing that you must do; you must BEGIN! Notice that I did not say that the one thing is to try. That is because “try” doesn’t have enough force behind it. You must BEGIN. You must start. You must take the first step. Airplanes do not “try” to take off. They “begin” to take off!

What would BEGIN look like to you? What would you attempt to do if you knew that you could not fail? Would you go back to school? Would you start your own business? Would you go ahead and get married and enter into a committed relationship? When you choose to BEGIN, I think you will be supported by people who want you to succeed.

I know this may seem like a simple concept, but I have discovered that oftentimes the root cause of inaction is fear of failing. Yet, if you stop and think about it, no one is hoping that you will fail! Everyone is pulling for you to succeed. The whole world loves and cheers for a winner – just ask Rocky Balboa!

Years ago, The Wide World of Sports came on television every Saturday afternoon. It always started the same way. The announcer would say that every sporting event was all about “the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.” It became a catchphrase that many people remember to this very day. Although there is sometimes the agony of defeat, there also is the thrill of victory!

I want to encourage you to go ahead and begin something in which you want to succeed. I am up in the stands cheering for you! I know that you can make great strides in what you want to do. It all starts when you set your mind to whatever it might be and begin the process. As you round the next lap, you will see me waving to you from the stands and lifting my banner that has your name on it. I know you will succeed and I want you to know that I am proud of you for beginning the process.

Now, BEGIN and GO DO IT!

Tip: People want you to succeed!
