Sometimes in life we have to act “as if” things have already happened. We must look forward with eyes of faith, trusting and believing that we are heading in the right direction and what we desire to come to pass, will in fact, actually happen in the future. I have found this to be a good way to approach life and future unknown activities. It is an effective method of goal setting to hold the picture of your desired outcome in your mind until it becomes a reality.
In Stephen Covey’s book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, one of the habits is to “See the End from the Beginning”. That is another way of saying, act “as if…” With this process and technique, you can get a clearer vision of things the way you want them to be, even before they become reality. With that thought in mind, I want to share a story with you.
I have a friend who serves as a great example of what I am talking about. He does not like to get up in the morning. Knowing that is a challenge he faces on a daily basis, he has learned to work with himself on it. On Monday morning, he acts “as if” he is excited about getting started with his day and week. He tells himself, “If you get up and get going early on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings, you can go out to your favorite restaurant for breakfast on Friday.” Now, that may seem to be the most childish thing you have ever heard, but for my friend, it works. And, after all, isn’t that what life is all about…seeing things accomplished, making progress, getting results, and achieving your hopes and dreams in a way that works for you?
In the world of recovery, people who have been addicted to many harmful substances have to re-train their minds to act “as if” they have made it through a day staying clean and sober. In other words, having hope at the beginning of the day brings good results and good clean living throughout the day.
There is an old proverb that says, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” I think acting “as if” is giving yourself permission to have some directional vision in order that you do not “perish” in your daily life, relationships, or business endeavors.
You may feel free to do whatever you want to with this Tip, but I have found it to be extremely helpful in giving me direction in my daily life. For you, perhaps it is a relationship with another person that needs to be mended. What if you knew that you did not have a lot of time left for that relationship to be healed? Would it be possible to act “as if” this is the time to make a change and perhaps humble yourself and go to the person to try and make things right?
What if you knew your next sales call would lead to you closing the biggest sale of your entire career? Could you act “as if” you were excited, committed, and appreciative to your client for the opportunity to serve them and help their life or business go better?
There are a thousand and one applications to this Tip, and I am confident you will find several ways to practice them this week! You might as well act “as if” you could get started today, because you can!
